8 Tips For Fly Fishing Beginners

I enjoy all types of fishing, but I don't enjoy just sitting and waiting for the fish, as in carp fishing for example, where one can sit for hours, even though this can result in the catching of a big fish.
However, I don't have the patience just to sit still and wait for the buzzer to go off, so most of my fishing has been general course fishing, particularly in rivers.
This is because if I wasn't catching fish, I would just move along the river until I did! That way I was always moving and never bored or sitting still.
Fly fishing is really what it's all about, for me at least.
I had never fly fished before as I thought it was a bit complicated.
Tip 1. Fishing the fly is niether complicated or elitist.
Don't let these myths put you off as they did me. Unless you want to fish the best rivers the UK for example, has to offer, fly fishing is not elitist. You will meet people from all walks of life.
Tip 2. Buy a combo.
There are fly fishing combos to suit all pockets, which generally include reel, rod and line, plus a few fliew as well.
Tip 3. Don't buy cheap.
It is arguable that you are more dependant on your rod for fly fishing success than in any other type of fishing. A fly fishing combo gives you the chance to perhaps spend a little more than you might have for a superior set of tackle.
However, don't buy on price. Do some research, after all, you want a rod that you can cast well, and as it is the rod, and not you, that provides the power in the cast, the type of rod is very important.
Tip 4. Don't complicate things!
After making your initial purpose of rod, reel and line, (and a few flies - a reasonable selection is often included), you will need a landing net, a priest, some monofilament and a pair of good quality nail clippers (for cutting lengths of monofilament). just about completes what you need.
Tip 5. Wear Appropriate Clothing
Most fisheries insist on wearing some form of eye protection, given that a fly is cast backwards as well as forwards, putting a passer by at risk from getting hooked. Buy polarised sun glasses as these also help you to spot fish. In addition a multi-pocket jacket or vest will allow you to dispense with carrying any sort of bag, useful when you are moving around and wanting to travel light.
Tip 6. Keep moving.
Some people will fish in the same spot all day, even if they are not catching. With fly fishing, it's important to "cover" the water in front of you by fishing to the left, right and centre, and at different depths, (you do that by counting off in seconds to give the fly time to sink, unless you are dry fly fishing). but if after, say half an hour, you have had no response at all, move to a different area.
Tip 9. Don't worry if you find casting difficult.
I was once given a fantastic tip by someone I regarded (and still do) as an expert fly fisher. He told me never to ignore the margins. Indeed I have caught some of my bigger fish close into the bank. So if it takes time for you to cast a good distance, don't worry, practice by casting along the bank - your cast will improve and you'll be fishing water often left untouched by others, with a great chance of catching.
Tip 8. Get some teaching!
This may be the most important thing you can do. So many people don't understand the most effective way to cast a fly line. It is very easy, but technique is crucial, and lessons should be taken to enjoy your fly fishing from day 1.
