Precisely What Does The Idea Of Braai Day Mean To You Personally?

In our house, Sunday has been Braai Day for very many years, in other words, since I became wedded but I am not happy to disclose exactly how long ago because then I would be letting slip my true age. I may be ageing however my vanity still exists! Anyway, it was initially only after I got engaged to be married that Sunday became Braai Day for me because, just like numerous South African men, my spouse is a braaing aficionado and and declares that this weekly ritual has to be adhered to in our home. I'm not complaining, though, mainly because it is the one day in a 7-day period that I am able to get him to do the cooking.
But what actually is a 'braai'? Although most South Africans have a profound knowledge of and abiding fascination with what this term signifies, the planet continues to be vast enough for some people to never have heard of it. The term is actually an abbreviation of the Afrikaans word 'braaivleis' which pretty much refers to cooking meat over coals - on your grill, naturally, we are not that unsophisticated. Aah, I can tell you understand what a braai essentially is now. In certain countries, it's referred to as a 'cookout' or a 'barbeque' that potentially sounds far more civilised than a 'braai' or 'barbie' which is the Australian term for it, such as "Toss a shrimp on the bah-bie for us, mate".
Don't you fancy how the sounds 'bar-be-kew' trip lightly off the tongue when voiced out loud? It's in strong contrast to the down and dirty sounding 'braai' which suggests that going-at-it-with-hammer-and-tongs is the recommended strategy. Of course, my hubby only utilizes tongs to flip the steak but you get my drift. And what is my part in Braai Day, you may ask. Basically, my spouse grills the meat whilst I put together the accompaniments. My spud salad, that goes exceptionally well with grilled meat, is well-liked by both my hubby and my kids who, needless to say, are all adults with kids of their very own but there I go, letting my age slip again.
Suffice it to say, the whole family descends on my home each weekend to take part in the delights of Braai Day although at least our daughters-in-law clean up afterward so what more can I ask for?
