It is well known that smiling and laughter can bring many physical and emotional benefits to human beings. However, sometimes it is good to know exactly how something benefits us as having the knowledge will motivate us to smile and laugh more often.
Two of the most significant benefits of laughter are through inducing positive chemical and hormonal effects in the body, and by re-framing our experiences.
MEDICAL EFFECTS OF LAUGHTER - It is widely acknowledged in the medical world that laughter brings positive medical benefits to the body. Studies have been made on the effect of laughter on the body. In fact, many doctors recommend patients to use laughter as a form of treatment therapy, such as listening to jokes or watching funny movies. Among the medical effects of laughter are;
i. Lower Blood Pressure - Laughter can help bring down our blood pressure. After the initial burst of laughter, our blood pressure lowers when we naturally breathe deeper and fuller after laughing.
ii. Good Workout - We exercise various muscle groups when we are laughing. The abdomen, face, diaphragm, back and chest all gets a good workout. It particularly helps in our digestion process and also burns calories.
iii. Pain reliever & feel good factor - Laughter releases endorphins, which is a natural pain reliever and gives a sense of well being. It is known as the feel good hormone.
iv. Brain Power - When you're laughing, it involves both hemispheres of the brain. This encourages a more balanced mental process especially in creativity and problem solving.
RE-FRAMING EXPERIENCES - Laughing also helps us re-frame our perspective and experiences. By laughing, you unconsciously tell yourself that the situation isn't that bad and that you can handle it. Try laughing when you are dealing with a problem and experience how everything will feel much better.
Think about it, there are many things in life that are not worth getting upset over. Meet challenges with laughter and you will be in an empowered state to handle any problem that comes your way.
It is often not a good idea to respond to challenges when you are in an angry, stressed or upset state. Your judgment will be clouded by these emotions. By using laughter, you put everything back into perspective.
There is absolutely no reason at all for us not to smile and laugh more often throughout the day. Make it a point to cultivate this habit. The more you laugh, the more it becomes a habit.
