Neuro Linguistic Programming, otherwise known as NLP, is the process of altering how people perceive and re-act to situations by changing their linguistic patterns. It is a practice first established in the 1970s when American student, Richard Bandler, approached his tutor, John Grinder, with a theory that changes in behavioural syntax can positively impact on a person's life.
The versatility of NLP means it can be effectively applied to any number of situations and problems and in this respect, it changes individual problems, issues or points of unhappiness to transform the bigger picture. This is achieved through a series of direct questions, posed to encourage conversation about individual elements of a person's life. It is the manor in which the questions are answered (or even avoided) and the tone, depth and vocabulary with which they are discussed that forms the basis of diagnosis.
Completely drug free, the person is then re-taught how to communicate to cultivate positivity and prevent others' negativity also becoming their own burden. This 'tinkering' with the mechanics of communication increases personal awareness of our own habits whilst adapting them to combat depressive states. A single session will not bring lifelong fulfilment, but applied to 'problem areas' the techniques encourage over all happiness.

The practice is called Gestalt therapy- analysis of how a person's thoughts and experiences are considered as a whole, rather than as unrelated incidentals, to which there is no direct correlation with mood.
