If you are an avid golf fan and have watched the pros at work then I am sure you have wondered how in the heck they are able to hit the ball so far with accuracy. The secret is in the golf swing plane. Simply put, having a good swing plane means you will be able to hit the ball further with greater accuracy.
Visualize Tiger Woods golf swing when thinking of your own golf swing plane. Ben Hogan was responsible for getting golfers obsessed with attaining the perfect golf swing plane.
Before I reveal the good stuff here are some basics to keep in mind.
There are 3 parts to the golf swing plane
1. Backswing - Is when you draw the golf club behind your shoulders getting ready to swing forward and down in order to hit the ball
2. The downswing - swinging the club down to strike the golf ball
3. The follow through
The golf swing plane is basically the ideal path on which the golf club must travel during a golf swing in order to achieve strong, consistent and accurate shots. Depending on how much you bend from the hips forward your plane may be flatter or steeper and is ultimately influenced by your posture.
To visualize the golf swing plane, imagine yourself in the normal stance before you take a shot and draw an imaginary line in your mind that starts from the ball and extends diagonally towards and extends above and behind you.
The proper swing would consist of drawing the club back and keeping it parallel to the imaginary diagonal line and stopping when the club head is above your right shoulder(if you're right handed) then bringing it back down the same path in order to strike the ball and finally bringing it back to the top to follow through after striking the ball.
The correct posture is extremely important in addition to the above. Your grip, aim, stance and posture should be correct in order to take the perfect golf shot.
Here are 5 Tips to fix your golf swing
1. Swinging within the proper golf swing plane is crucial in order to achieve a good shot. In order to swing within the plane the correct posture is important. Correct posture consists of distributing your body weight evenly on the balls of your feet, hands must hang low, back should be straight, bend at the hips, chin up and aim with your body.
2. Try to keep your head still and eyes on the ball in order to get the best shot possible
3. Draw the club back until it's behind you
4. If you're in the correct swing plane then the shaft of the club should be behind you directly across your shoulders
5. The ideal golf swing plane is different for everyone. Consistent practice will reveal what the correct swing plane is for you. If the club is extended way past your shoulders then your swing plane is too steep and if it's too low then your plane will be flat
6. Practice until you feel comfortable
