Using Hamster Toys To Keep Your Pet Active

There are a number of different things that hamster toys do for your pet. The most important one is probably the exercise factor. It doesnt matter what kind of hamster you have - Your little guy has to work out! A lot of hamster cages are a bit too small for rodents to run around in though. Because of this, we need to find a variety of ways to keep our rodents active and healthy.
Luckily there are a number of toys available that help hamsters stay active. I've outlined a few of the most popular ones below. Different toys have different benefits so don't think that you have to choose just one!
The most common hamster toy available is the hamster wheel. These wheels really are synonymous with hamsters now. It's gotten to the point where it's uncommon to see a cage without a wheel! This makes perfect sense. The wheel, while basic, provides your hamster with some of the exercise he needs. It's the ideal toy for a pet that doesn't get the chance to leave his cage very often. The wheel is also a relatively safe toy for your hamster. The one thing you may want to consider before deciding on a wheel is it's size. If the wheel isn't the correct size, your pet may not be interested in using it.
Another product you might want to check out is the run-about. It's basically a plastic ball that your hamster sits inside. You place the ball outside the cage and let your little buddy roam free. This toy is similar to a hamster wheel in that it allows your pet to run without fear of getting hurt. The biggest difference, of course, is the fact that the run-about allows your hamster to experience life outside of the cage. These products are all kinds of fun. Although the plastic balls are fairly strong, your pet should still be supervised while using the run-about.
There are other exercises, besides running, that every healthy hamster should be doing. One such exercise is climbing. Hamsters love to climb. Is this a bad thing? Heck no! There are so many neat climbing toys available for hamster cages. A lot of them look like houses and mountains too. This way you can provide your hamster with a bit of atmosphere while giving him something to climb. Ive had a ton of fun setting up hamster cages for my pets. One thing that should be considered is the material that these toys are made out of. Some climbing toys made out of plastic could be mildly toxic. Its probably best to stick to natural woods and PVC free plastics.
Please keep in mind that, even for hamsters, variety is the spice of life. If you have a few different toys for your hamster, you'll be subtly encouraging him to work out multiple muscle groups. Be creative, keep it light hearted, and have fun!
