Maintaining Your Leopard Gecko Diet

It is important as a gecko owner to feed your pet the proper leopard gecko diet for their health and well being. You need to know that a leopard gecko diet consists primarily of insects and worms. You can get these items commercially available at pet stores catering to reptiles.
Mealworms, wax worms, silk worms, super worms and cricket are the most commonly used foodstuffs for a leopard gecko diet. Nonetheless, the primary food source used by many owners for their leopard gecko diet is mealworms and crickets. They also treat their pet with wax worms and other worms.
Crickets should be the mainstay of your leopard gecko diet. They provide the right kind of nutrition for your gecko and are inexpensive. You need to gut load the crickets before actually feeding them to the geckos. These means you have to feed your crickets before feeding them to the gecko to give the leopard gecko the best possible nutrition.
You can use commercially prepared cricket food or liquid or you can just put in a potato, some oats, a carrot or an apple for the crickets and feed it to them on a regular basis. This will also help draw the crickets out of their hiding places and make them easier to catch for use as leopard gecko food. Your leopard gecko diet will be healthier if you feed them healthy crickets.
Mealworms are another great food for a healthy leopard gecko diet. A bunch of mealworms in a bowl could do as food for your gecko. But use a smooth bowl for the mealworms, or else, they can easily get away from the bowl. Another excellent food for a leopard gecko diet is wax worms. However, they are not considered as primary ingredient of the leopard gecko diet, since they are too fatty. Nonetheless, they can be great treats and good food for a female gecko that just laid eggs.
Vitamins and minerals as supplement should be included in a leopard gecko diet, which will be given by a good leopard gecko owner. You are providing the gecko with calcium when you placed a special dish containing calcium powder. Before serving them as actual food for the geckos, insects must also be coated with calcium powder.
Babies and breeding females require more calcium"up to every day. Vitamins should never be given on the same day as the minerals and dont need to be given as often as calcium. Once every seven to ten days, you should coat your insects with vitamin liquid or powder by dusting them together with the powder in a plastic bag before presenting them to the leopard gecko.
Don't forget that every leopard gecko diet needs water and geckos need water to survive. Use a shallow dish and fill it with water. Be careful not to make the water too deep as the water can drown the insects, spoiling both the insect and the water. Every few days you need to clean out the water dish as bacteria and fungi can grow in any water, which is left standing too long. The water should be fresh and clean for your geckos.
