Goldfish need a tank big enough to provide at least 7 gallons of water per fish. So if you wanted to keep 4 fish you would need an aquarium that holds at least 27 gallons.
When choosing a tank for your goldfish, try to pick a long one that allows plenty of surface area. Goldfish need high levels of oxygen in their water, so a tall tank with little surface area is not a good choice.
You should aim to maintain the water temperature in the tank at 65 to 72 degrees Fahrenheit, as goldfish like fairly cool water. Keeping a thermometer in the tank will help ensure the temperature stays ideal. This is an important step in keeping your goldfish disease free.
Ensure that you purchase a quality filtration system for the tank. When choosing a filter take into account the size of the aquarium and try to pick one that will be easy to clean. If you are keeping fancy tailed variety of goldfish in the aquarium, it is very important that the filter will not provide a very fast current. Fast flowing water will cause this type of goldfish to have difficulty swimming around.
The main reasons that goldfish don't live as long as they rightfully can are easy to avoid. Don't allow overcrowding in the tank, and resist the temptation to overfeed. Poor water quality is the other great danger to a goldfish life. To provide you goldfish with the best chance provide an adequate filtration system, change the water regularly, and make sure that food waste doesn't build up in the water. Waste can cause water to become toxic to goldfish.
With very little work and maintenance you and your goldfish will feel the benefits for years to come. Keeping goldfish can be a very enjoyable and rewarding experience, and doesn't have to be short lived.
