If you have cat that sheds its hair a lot or has long hair then you probably know about hairballs. Hairballs are usually vomited up hair and stomach matter and usually do not cause other problems. If your cat is coughing up these hairballs more than 2 or 3 times a week then you might want to look into remedies to stop this problem. Hairballs are not usually life threatening to cats and is a normal reaction when too much hair has been accumulated in the stomach.
If your cat constantly vomits up hairballs you will want to take actions. Here are a few steps you can follow that will help your cat from vomiting up hair.
1.) Brush your cat often. If you have a very hairy cat or if your cat has long hair then you will want to look into buying a cat brush and brushing your cat at least four times a week. Persians are cats that shed their hair almost year round and while they lick and clean themselves, they tend to ingest a lot of their hair.
2.) Wash your cat at least twice a week. By washing your cat you will help keep the hair off and hopefully stop your cat from cleaning itself.
3.) Buy cat hairball treatment. Most animal stores sell food or cat treats that help reduce the amount of hairballs your cat vomits up. When your cat eats these treats or food, the active ingredients go to work in the stomach of the cat, which helps break down the hair already there.
When your cat licks its fur, the fur is digested into the stomach. Usually this hair is digested completely and goes out as cat poop, but when the hair clumps up and starts to irritate the lining of the stomach, it causes a reaction that eventually ends up as cat vomit. Even though hairballs are not usually a big problem, it can be an annoyance to your cat. If you have tried these three steps and your cat still vomits up hair, then you might want to take your animal to the vet and have it checked out. Some extremely furry cats, such as Persians need extra special attention so be sure to take care of your cats hairball problems quickly.
