In 2015 The Panama Canal Expands
Go to: Previous Article Next Article
The Panama Canal is a ship canal which was built in order to join the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Naturally its construction had a significant and positive impact on maritime trade, which was the primary reason behind its construction. Now there is a new project being proposed by the Panama Canal Authority which would expand traffic capacity of the Panama Canal.
This expansion is also going by the name of the Third Set of Locks Project. Its aim is to construct a pair of lock complexes with one at each of its ends. These complexes are aimed at water preservation, something which had been a concern in the past relating to the continued use of the canal. The project would also aim at constructing new access channels as well as widening the channels that already exist. Lastly a goal of the project is to deepen the aforementioned channels as well.
The canal expansion is what has been termed a mega project. Mega projects are endeavors which can and often do have very widespread impacts upon the surrounding environment and neighboring communities. They often cost a significant amount that is well above one billion US dollars and tend to get a lot of attention. This can naturally lead to a great deal of publicity and discussion related to the project.
Having started in September 2007, it is expected that the project will be completed by 2015. This is likely a result of the many organizations and individuals that were in favor of it. This was likely due to the canal expansion's potential benefits which would affect both the country itself and those who traverse it. For example, the project is supposed to pay for itself in time as well as bring a substantial return on investment.
Beyond that, it is believe that the project will reduce the level of poverty within Panama by about 30%. This benefit will be generated by the increasing demand for all kinds of labor involved directly with the project or related to it. Of course the improved channels and new traffic lane constructed by the project can likely bring in higher toll revenues as well.
This can also mean an increase in profits for those invested in the industry of trading which involves the canal. As the capacity for cargo ships is increased so should the profit margin for both Panama and those involved in the maritime trade industry. This only leaves the environmental impact as a possible concern for the project.
The Panama Canal Authority has performed studies regarding the environmental impact of its project and claims that no significant damage will be done environmentally. The area in which the work will be done is already owned by the organization and no major community upheaval is necessary for its work to be done. It also states that the lock systems being installed are intended to mitigate the environmental impacts of the increase in usage of the canal.
As stated previously it is expected that this project will be concluded by the year 2015. With its completion it is expected that there will be new prosperity within the country of Panama. Time will tell and many will be watching this project closely.
