The various factors to be taken into account while designing a website are structurally planned and this structural planning is called documentation. The purpose of a website should be in line with audience that the client is going to want for the website. The type of audience is one more issue that the web designer has to deal with. The content of a webpage is planned and then decisions where to place the content in the website is also part of documentation. Documentation is used for reviewing a website before entering the process of designing it completely. It is just like a blueprint of a building before you start laying the bricks.
Documentation is the key to efficient designing. Without documentation the web designing process is bound to fail. Reviewing the whole design can itself take days to complete. This is because the documentation will show any flaws that are to be corrected. When the entire document is ready without flaws then further planning about designing can be done. There are many steps in documentation the first step is called information architecture. In this step the entire content planned for the website is sorted out and classified under different headings. The formulation of information structure is the main idea behind information architecture. The site map is a visual illustration of a document and the building of a site map is called information structure. The site map will decide on various factors interconnection between the contents in a webpage. If at all a connection is missing between the different contents the site map will help you decide the contents that have to be included. The storyboard is a part of the documentation process which will help the designer to plan the arrangement and layout of the separate WebPages in a website. Storyboarding also involves marking each page with several titles like purpose, content and description.
A flow chart is made for all the things that have been planned and the flow diagram will decide where to start and how to proceed. The flowchart is drawn manually with a pencil on a paper and website with numerous can even ask for many pages to glued to each other. Many web design firms have custom made software just for this purpose of documentation and storyboarding. Some pages in the website will be totally different from the others. For example, the starting page may only have an introduction but the links leading up to the following pages may have a lot of arrangements of data in a very detailed manner. In such cases website wireframes are used to create a rough diagram or a replication of the originally planned website. This rough diagram or replica is a comprehensive layout of the actual website. It is just to know how a website will look like. There are neither functions enabled nor any links created in this wireframe. It is nothing but planning a website or in a single word it means documentation. Wireframe is just like an image file of how the WebPages appear.
