Raster graphics are collections of color or black and white pixels. These are formats like GIF, JPEG, PNG, and BMP. Photos from digial cameras are a great example of raster graphics. The camera stores a photo as a sequence of light values it sees from different directions. Many cameras store images in JPEG format.
Raster graphics are the most common type of computer graphics. Most web graphics are raster graphics, and there are many other programs for manipulating them. One of the most common software tools for creating and editing raster graphics is Adobe Photoshop.
The main drawback of raster graphics is that they do not scale well. If you take a photograph and blow it up, for example, the result will be grainy.
Vector graphics formats store pictures and instructions for drawing the picture using lines, shapes, and colors. The most common vector format is PDF, but there are other types like postscript and EPS. These files are often used for diagrams and illustrations in magazines and books. PDF files are most often used for page layout.
Vector graphics scale well since they're just collections of shapes and lines. That means you can take a vector graphics file and make it as big or small as you want. This flexibility makes vector graphics ideal for applications like making different sized computer icons.
