Two of the most commonly used ones are resistive and capacitive. It's not unlikely that you have run into these terms when going through the list of specifications of a gadget you're reading about.
A resistive type is composed of thin layers of different materials. Two of these are electrically conductive sheets that are next to each other, but with a narrow gap between. Pressure is created when you tap the surface, causing those two electrically conductive sheets to come in contact with one another. This changes the electric current present.
A stylus is often used with this kind of display panel. However, it can get easily damaged by a sharp-edged object. What's so great about a resistive type of display panel is it's cheaper to manufacture compared to its capacitive rival.
The capacitive type employs a glass that's coated with a transparent conductor. When touched by the finger, the electrostatic field of the display is distorted. That's because the human body is a conductor too. The information is then processed for the device sporting the display panel to yield the right information or action.
Compared to a resistive one, the capacitive type can produce brighter images. Using a stylus here can't be done, unless one that's designed specifically for a capacitive display is used. There are also certain types of gloves which may now be used on touch screens that employ such technology as they have specialized tips.
