The BlackBerry has always been a phone which aims to help people at work to access emails, check things on the internet and basically make staying up to date whilst on the go much easier. BlackBerry was at the forefront of this sector for a long time and was pretty much unrivalled until the unstoppable force which is the iPhone. The iPhone was a much more user friendly alternative to the BlackBerry which offered the same work related features plus a whole lot more.
The web browser and email features which made the BlackBerry so popular were available on the iPhone but so were thousands of applications offering additional features. Given that the iPhone did what most BlackBerry users needed plus a whole lot more, a lot of phone buyers had no reason not to opt for the iPhone. After going ahead, Apple led the mobile phone sector for a while until BlackBerry hit back with applications of its own.
BlackBerry's existing customer base was suffering as more and more people converted to Apple's iPhone to reap the benefits of the added features. Because of this BlackBerry were forced to start offering applications to attempt to salvage the following which they had built up over previous years. Many still preferred the business orientated side of the BlackBerry and so when BlackBerry introduced applications, these people were able to return to their favoured manufacturer.
BlackBerry is the main competitor to Apple's dominance and has managed to secure a strong percentage of the market. To maintain the percentage though, BlackBerry are highly dependent on App developers so that other manufacturers can't offer features BlackBerry cannot. The addition of applications to BlackBerry handsets has put them on a par with Apple and so they have been able to retain the customers who prefer their phones user experience.
Whilst the survival of BlackBerry and their continuing to compete in their market is highly dependent on app developers, it is exactly the same scenario for all other manufacturers. Applications can be the feature which helps people decide on a handset and so being able to offer them is vital for all manufacturers.
