Pole Pruner Saw Makes Pruning A Cinch
Go to: Previous Article Next Article
Any homeowner with tall trees on their property will need a pole pruner saw at one time or another. Since it can be quite dangerous to stand on a ladder and cut high branches with a hand saw, an extensible pruning saw is almost indispensable for these tasks.
High branches that need thinning, dead wood and diseased branches can all be removed safely with these cutting tools. Most combine a pruning saw and a lopper blade in one tool. The lopper, used for the small branches and twigs, operates with a rope that is pulled to close the blade. A double pulley system makes operating it easy.
Look for a saw blade that is made of heavy gauge steel, treated for rust resistance and teflon coated teeth. Look for an adjustable saw blade, so you can set it for different angles. Make sure you buy one that has a removable and replaceable blade. Your manually operated pole pruner saw limits you to cutting branches up to an inch in diameter.
Most quality pruning saws will have a telescoping pole that can extend 12 feet or more. Fiberglass or aluminum poles are alternative choices, but the fiberglass is stronger and lighter weight.
Electric pole pruning saws are also available. They are much easier to use, and have the benefit of cutting larger branches, up to 6 inches in size. These are small chain saws with an electric motor, mounted onto a fiberglass pole. The mini chain saw can be easily detached so that it can also be use as a small hand held chain saw.
One of the difficulties in using any pole pruner saw is positioning it. With a saw blade or power saw located at the end of a long pole, every movement of your hand will seem amplified. It may also be hard to see because of the leafy canopy. With any work performed above you, you must wear safety glasses and a hard hat for protection against falling branches. However, with care and experience, you will find your pruning tasks simpler when you have this tool in your toolbox.
