There is a great variety of hard surface materials ranging from wooden bricks to concrete. The first named can be of the formal type or informal, such as trunk cross-sections, "rounds," of Redwood or other durable trees. Then come all kinds of masonry bricks, flagstone, colored concrete (cement), selected flat field stones, poured concrete laid in geometric patterns, tile, and Belgian blocks.
Service and Appearance
In making a selection the important thing is to choose the kind that fits the type of garden and the particular use it is to serve. Assume, for example, that you have a formal private area with a walk running straight down the center. Properly a formal pattern, it could be surfaced with bricks of square or rectangular cut rather than the broken or random type which would suit a path or terrace in an informal garden.
Naturalistic Paving
In a naturalistic garden with a sitting area and a garden path curving in front of flower borders with solar garden lights edging the borders, the paving material could logically consist of irregular flagstone for the sitting area and stepping stones for the path. These are ways of insuring that the garden shall present a single, harmonious effect.
Using Waste Concrete
Looking ahead to the time when you may be building your home, there is a very practical way to save surplus ready-mixed concrete that might otherwise be wasted. Often small amounts of excess concrete are dumped at random on your property and left to harden. Eventually you often have to remove them at considerable cost in dollars or perspiration.
Make several rectangular forms out of good strong 2x4s and ask your contractor to pour any surplus concrete into them. Ultimately, you will have a good supply of concrete slabs that you can use eventually in a number of different ways.
They will make excellent stepping stones, or can be used in laying a concrete walk in a formal garden. Stepping stones should be about 18x24 inches in size. Make a larger slab for your garbage can.
