If you are planning a trip to Italy then one part you might consider visiting is Amalfi. It is a mix of old world charm and breathtaking scenery that will give you plenty of things to see and do on your vacation.
However if you are driving yourself you would be wise to keep your eye on the road. You see the roads are perched on the very edges of the high cliffs. They are quite narrow roads, with a surprisingly small barrier between the road and fresh air. This is all the more disconcerting if you are in a high bus as you can feel like you are literally peering over the edge of the cliff. If you are not scared of heights then this is quite a spectacular introduction to the Amalfi coastline.
You will find the small town of Amalfi in the province of Salerno, Campania region. It is a popular spot to spend a bit of time relaxing. Italians will venture this way for a long weekend and other Europeans will spend a week of so there. It is very much a place to relax and repose. Along with Amalfi, you should think about checking out Positano too. this is another small, pretty town that is about 15 minutes traveling from Amalfi.
Amalfi is a port town, as such there is not much of a beach. It does have a rather spectacular town center however. The center of the town is the cathedral or Duomo di Amalfi. This is a baroque styled building which sits atop of the Piazza Duomo. The piazza is scattered with many quaint shops and restaurants. It is a popular spot to partake of some alfresco eating or take a coffee in the Summer. The dominate feature of the square is the long, sweeping stairway that joins the Duomo to the Piazza. Many a holiday snap is taken on these stairs.
There are many specialties of the region that you will find in the shops of the town. You want to get yourself a bottle of limoncello liqueur if you can. This is a sweet lemon alcoholic liqueur that is made from the fleshy lemons native to the region.
Amalfi is a must see town and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
If you want a more traditional beach holiday or simply a day at the beach then Positano might be for you. Although the beach is a pebble beach and set in a bay that makes the sea fairly flat, it is still a unique day at the beach that will please adults and children alike. You get to the beach by walking through the town of Positano. The town is built on the edge of the hills in a stepped fashion. this makes for a unique view as you look back at the town from the beach. you will also find many restaurants and shops on the shore front if you want to eat or do other things.
The region is quite rural or agricultural and you will be sure to see workers bringing in the olive harvest when you travel throughout the region. There is a genuine authentic feel to Amalfi and Positano that you will never see if you only visit Rome and the other big cities.
