Fuerteventura's unspoilt side

Fuerteventura is one of the very popular Canary Islands and is the closest of the islands to the African coastline. Of course being this close to Africa, Fuerteventura has a fantastic hot climate for most of the year and even in winter it is still much warmer than the rest of Europe. Fuerteventura is a beautiful island with amazing scenery and stunning golden beaches and this has made it a prevalent holiday destination with tourists from all over Europe.
With this influx of tourists though has come a lot of commercial development which has taken away a lot of the charm of certain areas of the island. Some resorts are now very busy and little of the Fuerteventura's tradition remains in these resorts. People who want to visit Fuerteventura but have a quite holiday needn't worry though because there is still the unspoilt side of the island which has hardly changed at all for many years.
Although the north-west coast of Fuerteventura doesn't get as much tourism as other parts, it is just as beautiful if not more beautiful as it doesn't have all of the huge modern hotels and shopping centres to spoil it. Along the north-west coast are numerous beaches and villages which are hardly visited by tourists and so are a great place to spend a day enjoying the sun in peace and quiet.
One of these villages is El Cotillo and is well worth visiting even if you aren't staying there. El Cotillo is a historic harbour village with lots of bars, restaurants and cafes serving traditional cuisine. Picture sitting next to a harbour in the sun with a cool drink and just watching the boats come in and out and you will quickly realise what the original attraction to Fuerteventura was many years ago.
Then there is Lajares which is fairly similar to El Cotillo but without the harbour and beaches. Lajares is about ten minutes in land from El Cotillo and the main attractions are the lovely traditional buildings, the museum and the many restaurants serving local cuisine.
