Go to: Previous Article Next Article
One of the most frequent health complaints is dizziness. And there are many types of dizziness treatments such as surgery, medication and vertigo exercises. Dizziness is technically known as vertigo, it can be defined as the feeling of movement when you are not moving. There are many different causes of dizziness ranging from non-serious conditions to more serious conditions. This article will focus on the dizziness caused by BPPV or benign positional vertigo.
Often incorrectly used interchangeably are the terms dizziness and lightheadedness. At first they may not seem that different and also it may feel unimportant to make the distinction but they are different and have different causes and therefore treatment options. The medical approach to dizziness treatment of using drugs or medication is not a good long term cure. Herbal remedies or natural options are also commonly used, along with vertigo exercises.
Lightheadedness can be described as a feeling like you are about to pass out or faint. You may feel slightly dizzy but you will not experience the feeling of you or your environment moving. The feeling of lightheadedness is often helped with lying down. You can feel nausea or vomit when you are lightheaded. The most common cause of lightheadedness is when you get up from lying down or being seated and move to a standing position. The change in posture requires a change in blood pressure to keep enough blood to the brain and head. When this is insufficient the feeling of lightheadedness will result. This is called orthostatic hypotension or and can result from low blood pressure.
Vertigo means you have a feeling of you or your environment moving when you or the environment is actually still. A sensation of falling, tilting, spinning or turning will be experienced. Together with the vertigo people can experience a feeling of nausea or being sick in the stomach. The vertigo may affect balance and therefore walking or standing can be difficult and this can increase the risk of falling. BPPV or benign positional vertigo is the most common cause of dizziness. This is condition is caused by loose particles in the balance organs of the inner ear. The particles affect the balance receptors which results in the sensation of vertigo.
Many dizziness treatments and remedies have been experimented with over the years for BPPV or benign positional vertigo. The role of medication or drugs in this case is to decrease the symptoms by suppressing the nervous system resulting in feeling less nausea or dizziness. This may provide symptomatic relief but it does nothing to fix the cause of the dizziness. Ginger has also been used as a natural means to suppress any symptoms. Although not a drug, ginger also does little to correct the underlying cause of BPPV.
However safe, effective and scientifically proven dizziness treatment exists for BPPV or benign positional vertigo. This treatment involves no drugs, medication or surgery. It does not even use herbal remedies. The treatments aim at correcting the underlying cause of the vertigo and fixing the problem once and for all.
