In our fast paced western culture, often one of the first things to go is sleep as we try to cram more and more into our day.
A new study form the University of Chicago showed evidence that lack of sleep can actually derail your attempts to lose weight via fat loss.
Researchers monitored 10 overweight men and women in a sleep clinic during two separate two week periods. The participants maintained the same diet and calorie consumption during both trials.
The only difference between the two trials was the amount of sleep allowed. During the first two week period the participants were permitted 5.5 hours of sleep each night while during the second two week period they were permitted 8.5 hours of sleep.
On average both trials showed the same amount of weight loss, but the 8.5 hour trial averaged more fat loss. The 5.5 hour trial resulted in weight loss from the loss of muscle. Researchers explained that when the human body is sleep deprived the hormone ghrelin, is released which promotes hunger and causes fat retention.
