In the sphere of gaming the call of duty series of games are one of the most popular. These FPS (first person shooter) games deal with military forces given specific assignments to carry out. Call of Duty is a series of mission based games and was first released in 2003 published by gaming giants Activision. Many incidents from World War II were featured in the game, the game was a huge success. The game's popularity continued with the release of Call of Duty 2, but Call of Duty 3 wasn't as successful. Modern Warfare was the fourth game in the Call of Duty series which was a hit with the fans and critics alike. All the previous games focused on World War II but this game got praise when it switched from World War II to tensions in the current world. After the overwhelming success of two more games in the installment, World at War and Modern Warfare 2, the series released its latest game Black Ops, in 2010.
This new game in the Call of Duty has unique settings which caught the attention of die-hard FPS fans worldwide. For the first time, any game in the series had focused on the cold war, and therefore, it got a lot of hype before its release, and ended up selling 7 million copies within 24 hours of its release. In the game, the player plays through the eyes of CIA covert operative Alex Mason, who is seen to be in captivity and is continuously interrogated by his silhouetted captors about his past. The game then plays in flashback where you have to complete various difficult missions where you take on the role of Alex Mason. The game won praise for its brilliant story telling and stunning visual effects, the game is based on several real incidents from cold war. In the game the Bay of Pigs incident is covered which has huge significance historically.
Critics have mostly praised the game, with several game rating websites deeming the game to be one of the best games of 2010. In the game Alex Mason assassinates Fidel Castro, albeit a fake one which created a huge controversy just like Modern Warfare 2. Leaders and common people with sympathies towards the communists saw this as a product of a capitalist American society and criticized it severely for depicting Castro's assassination. Despite the controversy, the new Call of Duty game manages to keep up the name of an already established and well reputed game series but the game is seen as a ploy by the Americans to turn the world against communism by communists.
