Here are a few easy tips to help you protect yourself:

1. Keep your social security card in a safe place. Do not carry it in your wallet. Memorize the numbers and if possible, keep it in a safety deposit box. If your card is lost or stolen, report to the authority immediately. If your social security number falls in the wrong hands, they can use it to steal your personal information.

2. Do not let your billing statements such as credit card or other bank statements lie around your work desk. If you don't need them, shred them! These bank statements contain a lot of personal information that can be used by others and can cause you a lot of unneccessary troubles.

3. Check your credit report every year, and don't forget there are 3 credit bureaus, make sure you check your report from each one since they can have different information. You get one free report from each of the three credit bureaus once a year by law, take advantage of that. You want to look over the whole report and see if anything looks wrong, but there are two particular areas you need to pay attention to: inquiries and address sections.

If you see some company that you aren't familiar with or done business with has been making inquiries than that is a good sign that someone is trying to get credit using your name and information. Report that immediately.

4. If you do shopping online, make sure you use a secured link that will provide encryption and secure identification. Make sure you check the URL of the site before you hit the order or add to cart button. The URL of a secure site should starts with "HTTPS" or "https". Make sure that you see the letter "S" or "s" in "HTTPS" or "https". Example: https://www.abccompany.com/orderform.html --> This is not a valid link, just an example to explain my point clearly.
