Linux hosting packages are less expensive because Linux is a free, open source system. Windows will cost you more since there are various licensing details from Microsoft that have to be observed. Nothing else needs to be said.

How would you like it when you called your provider and they already knew who you were? Or how would you like it if you called, had to wait on hold, then speak to someone either in another country or someone who is just about to get off their shift and could care less about your problems. Now I am not saying that the big hosts are like this, but you can find excellent small hosts who take their business very serious. A smaller host will know who you are when you call, will take the security of your information very serious and will be very interested in keeping you happy as their livelihood depends upon keepint your business. So you can get good customer service from one of the big hosts or you can get really excellent, relentless support from one of the smaller hosts. Just ask for referrals and don't be afraid to ask if they are a small hosting provider.
One big myth about web hosting is that all web hosting packages are identical. Shared web hosting packages are the most economical option for small businesses and individuals that would like to make their presence known on the internet. Make sure you ask the questions and you should be able to find the right package and the right hosting company for you.
