Where Do Dumplings Come From?

After having a wonderful meal comprising dumplings at one of the famous Ping Pong London restaurants, it is very likely that you are wondering when your next visit here will be and maybe where it is that dumpling originated. Even though you feel tempted to attribute the origin of dumplings to China after having had a nice meal at a Ping Pong restaurant, you should not trust your first judgment till you have done some research into the source of the dish or cooking style known as the dumpling.
There are varying perceptions and suggestions from experts and food researchers of the world when it comes to the origins of dumplings. Depending upon various sources, it can be said dumplings originated in European countries like Lithuania, Germany, Russia, Ukraine and Poland or the Asian giant, China.
Many people do not realise that regardless of how established or large a restaurant may be, it cannot hope to serve all types of dumpling dishes. There is a wide variety of dumpling dishes in the world; some are steamed, others fried or boiled, whilst others can be baked and even simmered. Similarly, there are dumplings in the world that are plain dough i.e. flour, potatoes or bread or filled with great things like meat, fish, vegetables or even sweets. The dumpling served in places such as a Ping Pong restaurant, are the ones influenced by China.
Taking this another step further, there are dumplings with thick gravy, with thin gravy, without gravy, with soup and even in stews. As is obvious by now, the variety of dumplings that can be found on the planet are truly endless as every region, country and culture has its own renditions.
It is estimated that dumplings originated around 500 to 600 years ago. This is something that most writings and researches seem to agree on, despite the fact that the geographical location of the origins is still not clear. Some sources in China suggest that dumplings originated as Jiaozi, which was a traditional food of the Chinese around half a millennia ago. These dumplings were primarily stuffed with various things like meat and vegetables and were an intrinsic part of Chinese culture. Jiaozi were eaten by the Chinese to mark the beginning of the spring festival at the turn of the year.
Another theory of dumplings is that the word 'dumpling' may have come from the German word 'dampf', which, basically, means steam. While the connection seems to fit, so does a certain bit of food history because Germans have a traditional dumpling dish known as the 'dampfnudel'. The unsaid assumption here is, of course, that 'dampfnudel' over time morphed into dumpling.
The point of the matter is that the actual origins of dumplings cannot be retraced with any certainty. The possible reason why the origins of dumplings cannot be traced back, could be the fact that dumplings or the style of cooking dumplings originated simultaneously in multiple regions and countries.
