But, it does require some maintenance in order to preserve it. It has to be cleaned properly and then sealed with special oil. This will ensure that it will last longer as it will not warp or split. For those who prefer to choose plastic, this is a fine option as well. You want to look for is a thicker board as opposed to those flimsy cheaper ones as it can make cutting quite difficult.
In addition to protecting your counter, it will also help you protect your knives. Using a knife on a hard surface will only end up making it dull and useless in a short while. This will also make it more dangerous to slice and dice in the future.
Having said all that, you must ensure that your cutting board is disinfected otherwise cross-contamination can occur. Of course, you can use bleach but, there is a natural bleach that is available and probably in your kitchen cupboards: vinegar. Just mix vinegar with water and you know that your surface is germ free.
