It's very hard for the normal individual to discern a real difference in meaning in the terms "wood", 'timber" and "lumber" because these words are most often interchanged in meaning. So, what are timber prices and what are lumber prices? In line with the Oxford dictionary, (not quoted word for word) wood is the thing that is under the bark of those things that grow in a forest, while timber is wood that has been sawed into planks for use in building, woodwork and cabinet working, and lumber is partly prepared timber. Any less confusing, probably not? Well, according to the Oxford Dictionary then timber prices will apply to those planks that have been sawed from wood to use in building, wood working and cabinet making.
The above does not imply that we now have no wood prices, nor lumber prices, but it is obvious that they are totally different from timber prices. Actually talking to craftsmen, they will reject that timber is utilized for building and construction, quarrelling that is the part of lumber, i.e. partly prepared timber. Timber is used to craft things from they'd say while lumber is the product that is used in building and construction. That appears to be sound debate, but on checking out the world wide web, regarding pricing many of these terminology are used interchangeably, which can't be correct. In talking to a timber merchant, he was adamant that he doesn't sell building panels or any 'timber' for construction purposes, only timber, which is used by craftsmen (including DIY enthusiasts) to do woodworking projects or in cabinet making, i.e. top quality fanatic stuff.
Presuming the artisans and the timber merchant understand what they're referring to, it is easier to ascertain what timber prices may be. It is not the price of poles, or rough planks used as scaffolding planks, or any such thing, it is rather the high quality product of wood, of more unique species, which is used for its finer qualities in the development of crafts furniture pieces and other woodwork purposes. What this means is we can ignore 80% of the ads for timber prices as not conforming to our requirements. To find timber prices, you should refine your search until you reach those timber merchants that provide yellow wood, oregan pine, kiaat, walnut, ash, maple and so on. These guys will not sell their goods to be used as rough planks when it comes to pushing wheel barrows along.
So, how are timber prices calculated? As the width and lengths of planks differ, prices are normally quoted per cubic metre as that is how their purchase price is also calculated. The formula is: Length x width x thickness x price x VAT. So, as you now know where to look and how to calculate timber pricing, you can go hunting for that bit of Turkish walnut from which to craft a new butt for your favourite rifle. Or you can go to the authorised market of South African indigenous woods on the danger list and discover how to bargain for a yellow wood plank or 2, provided you have the cash!
